Cacela Velha

Cacela Velha is a tiny hilltop hamlet in the eastern Algarve, close to Vila Real de Santo António, with barely more than a handful of houses, a small whitewashed church, and a partly ruined 18th-century fortress overlooking the Ria Formosa lagoon and its barrier sandbanks. Strict local building controls have kept the settlement largely unchanged, free of the shops, chains and new construction found even in the region's smaller towns, giving it an unusually preserved, quiet character. The main draw is simply the view: from the fortress terrace and the small square beside the church, the lagoon, sandbanks and open Atlantic beyond stretch out below in one uninterrupted panorama, especially striking in the golden light of early evening. A visit takes about an hour to explore the hamlet's handful of streets and viewpoints, though many visitors linger longer over a meal at the village's single restaurant, known for its cataplana and grilled fish using produce from the surrounding waters. From the small beach below the village, a rowboat or kayak can be hired to cross to the Ria Formosa's sandbanks, a short but memorable extension to a Cacela Velha visit. Because the hamlet has no significant parking area and only one restaurant, it remains one of the least commercialised and least visited spots in the eastern Algarve, best reached outside the busiest midday hours in summer.
