Coasteering

Coasteering combines swimming, scrambling and cliff jumping along the exposed limestone shoreline of the western Algarve, most commonly run out of Lagos near Ponta da Piedade, where sea caves, arches and deep-water gullies give sessions a mix of calm rock-pool sections and open-water swims. Sessions typically last two to three hours and require no prior experience, though participants should be comfortable swimming unaided in open water and jumping from heights of up to eight metres; most operators set a minimum age of around eight to ten years and a minimum swimming competence rather than a fitness threshold, since the pace is dictated by the group's slowest member. Wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets and guiding are included in the quoted price; participants need only bring swimwear, a towel and secure footwear that can get wet, such as old trainers or purpose-made water shoes. Reputable Algarve coasteering operators are certified through recognised UK or Portuguese adventure-sport bodies and carry public liability insurance; guides give a safety briefing covering entry and exit points, jump technique, and hand signals before entering the water, and lead groups with a qualified rescuer positioned to assist swimmers who tire or hesitate at a jump. Sessions are cancelled or rescheduled in onshore swell above roughly one metre or in strong offshore wind, since both conditions make cave entrances and jump pools unsafe. The activity runs from April through October, with the warmest, calmest water and longest daylight in July and August; spring and autumn sessions are cooler but quieter, with fewer other groups sharing the same coastline.
