Monsaraz

Monsaraz sits roughly 50km east of Évora and about 95km from Lisbon, and since there is no direct bus, the trip is best made by car, taking around 50 minutes from Évora along the N256; guided minivan day tours also run from Évora for travellers without a car. The walled village itself is compact and car-free inside the gates, built on a granite outcrop above the Alqueva reservoir, Europe's largest artificial lake. A one-day itinerary works well starting mid-morning: enter through the Porta da Vila and walk the single main cobbled street, Rua Direita, lined with whitewashed houses and small craft shops; visit the 13th-century Monsaraz Castle, built on Moorish foundations by King Dinis, for panoramic views over the lake and into Spain; and stop at the Igreja Matriz and the frescoed medieval courtroom nearby. After a light lunch at one of the small taverns on the main street serving Alentejo dishes such as migas and local cheeses, the afternoon suits a slower pace, walking the ramparts and photographing the lake from the castle walls before the light softens. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) bring the most comfortable temperatures for walking the exposed stone streets and ramparts, while summer visits are best done in the early morning or from late afternoon onward to avoid the midday heat. Arriving before 11am also helps beat the tour-bus crowds that fill the narrow street by midday.
