Estremoz

Estremoz lies about 46km north of Évora in the Alentejo, reachable in roughly 45 minutes by car via the N4/A6 or about an hour on a Rede Expressos bus for around €6-8. The town splits into an upper walled quarter, built on the hill around the 13th-century keep, and a lower town of whitewashed streets and marble-faced facades, since Estremoz has quarried the local white marble since Roman times. A day itinerary works well starting in the morning at the Praça Rossio Marquês de Pombal, the lower town's main square, especially if the visit falls on a Saturday, when the long-running weekly market fills the square with local cheese, bread, olives, and crafts. From there, climb to the upper town to see the imposing Torre das Três Coroas keep, part of the medieval castle now housing a pousada, and the Museu Municipal in the old town hall, which displays Alentejo folk art and ceramic figurines. Afternoon suits a slower walk along the ramparts and a stop in one of the marble-fronted cafés on the way back down. Estremoz is a year-round destination since the walking is largely level, though a Saturday visit is worth planning around specifically for the market; outside market days the town is quieter but still walkable in a half-day. Lunch options in the lower town serve traditional Alentejo dishes such as ensopado de borrego and local sheep's cheese.
