Mértola

Mértola is the furthest of the region's day trips from Évora, about 140km south and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by car via the A2/IP2; a Rede Expressos bus also runs via Beja, taking around 2 hours 30 minutes with limited departures, so driving is generally more practical given the distance. Given the drive, an early departure is recommended to make the most of the day. The whitewashed riverside town sits above the Guadiana river and is layered with Roman, Islamic, and Christian history, most visibly at the Igreja Matriz, a former mosque converted into a church that still retains its mihrab and horseshoe-arched doorways. A morning visit suits the Museu Islâmico, one of Portugal's best collections of Islamic-era artefacts, alongside the smaller Roman and archaeological museums scattered through the historic core, before continuing up to the hilltop Mértola Castle for views over the Guadiana valley. Afternoon suits a walk along the riverside and a stop at one of the town's restaurants for Alentejo river-fish dishes. Spring and autumn are best for the drive and the exposed hilltop walking, since summer in this southern part of the Alentejo runs notably hot; an early arrival also allows more time before the long return drive.
