The Rynek Underground Museum lies beneath the Main Market Square and the Cloth Hall in Krakow, Poland, at Rynek Glowny 1. It presents the results of archaeological excavations carried out between 2005 and 2010 below the square, which revealed layers of the medieval town from before and after the 1257 location charter. The museum, a branch of the Historical Museum of Krakow, opened in 2010 and tells the story of the city from the early settlement phase through the 15th century. Excavators uncovered the remains of the original market, with the street layout, wooden pavements, and the foundations of stalls and merchants' booths. Among the most striking finds are early medieval burials, including graves from before the town's foundation, and traces of the fire that destroyed the settlement during the Mongol invasion of 1241. Exhibits include goods that reached Krakow along trade routes: lead and salt from the region, cloth, jewellery, and objects from the Baltic and Mediterranean worlds. The curatorial approach is immersive rather than purely object-based. Visitors walk along raised walkways over the excavated ground, through multimedia displays, projected scenes and reconstructed trading stalls. Interactive screens and holographic projections explain medieval crafts, the guild system and weights and measures used at market, and a section deals with the rule of law and the town's relationship with the crown. Rooms present themes such as burial customs, commerce, daily life and the city's growth as part of the Hanseatic trade network. The route is arranged in a broadly chronological sequence, ending with the Renaissance city above. The conservation challenge was the high moisture level and salt-bearing groundwater under the square, which required a climate-controlled environment, and the museum remains one of the most technologically advanced exhibitions of its type in Poland. The surviving archaeological structures are mostly well preserved because they were sealed under centuries of fill. The visit takes about 75 to 90 minutes and the space is cool year-round.
