The Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny) is the centrepiece of the Old Town in Krakow, in the Lesser Poland region of southern Poland. It was laid out after the Mongol destruction of 1241 and the 1257 location charter granted by Boleslaw the Chaste, which set out a regular grid of streets around a vast square of roughly 200 by 200 metres. That scale made it one of the largest medieval squares in Europe.

For centuries it served as the town's marketplace, civic stage and site of public ceremony. In 1525 the Prussian Homage took place here, when Albert of Hohenzollern swore fealty to the Polish king Sigismund I. In 1794 Tadeusz Kosciuszko took his oath as leader of the national uprising on the square. The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) in the centre began as a Gothic trading hall in the 14th century and received its Renaissance attic and loggias after a fire in 1555. Its upper floor houses the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art, a branch of the National Museum, while stalls on the ground floor still sell amber, souvenirs and crafts. The Town Hall Tower, around 70 metres high and slightly leaning, is the only remnant of the Gothic town hall demolished in 1820. St Mary's Basilica on the corner is famous for its two unequal towers and the carved Gothic altarpiece by Veit Stoss, completed in 1489. From the taller tower a trumpeter plays the hejnal every hour, breaking off abruptly to commemorate the medieval watchman said to have been shot during a Tatar attack. The small Romanesque church of St Adalbert is among the oldest buildings on the square, and its foundations sit below the present street level. The Adam Mickiewicz monument, unveiled in 1898, is the traditional meeting point. The square was part of the historic centre listed by UNESCO in 1978. Presentation is open-air and chronological rather than curated, although the tower exhibitions offer a modest interpretive layer. Preservation is high, with ongoing renovation of the paving, facades and tenements.
