Sunday Bazaar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal

The Sunday Bazaar near Aladdin Park in Gulshan-e-Iqbal is a sprawling open-air market that sets up only once a week, drawing large crowds of budget-conscious local shoppers from across Karachi's eastern districts. Rows of temporary stalls sell a mix of clothing (new and secondhand), household goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, small electronics and mobile accessories, shoes, and general odds and ends, giving the bazaar a genuinely working-class, no-frills character distinct from Karachi's fixed retail markets. Because vendors set up stalls fresh each week rather than operating from permanent shopfronts, prices are almost always negotiable, and bargaining hard is both expected and necessary to get a fair rate; cash in Pakistani rupees is essentially the only payment method available. There is no tax-refund scheme. The atmosphere is loud, dusty, and extremely crowded, particularly in the late morning once the bazaar is in full swing, with narrow walking space between stalls and constant vendor calls advertising prices. Food is available from simple snack stalls scattered throughout rather than formal restaurants. Because the bazaar operates only on Sundays and packs down completely afterward, timing a visit correctly is essential, and arriving in the morning offers the best selection before the most popular stalls sell out of their better stock.
