Wazir Mansion (Quaid-e-Azam Birthplace Museum)

Wazir Mansion, in the Kharadar quarter of old Karachi, is the house traditionally identified as the birthplace of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan, born there on 25 December 1876. The building is a three-story townhouse in a late-19th-century Sindhi urban style, built by Jinnah's grandfather, with balconied upper floors typical of Kharadar's merchant-quarter architecture from that period. After Pakistan's independence in 1947, the house was preserved and later converted into a memorial museum under government custodianship, with rooms furnished to reflect a middle-class Karachi household of the late 19th century. Displayed items include period furniture, photographs documenting Jinnah's family and early life, and some personal memorabilia associated with the Jinnah family. The curatorial approach follows a room-by-room domestic layout rather than a strict chronological exhibition, guiding visitors through the reconstructed living spaces of the house. Restoration work has maintained the building's original wooden balconies and brickwork, though the surrounding Kharadar neighborhood has changed considerably since the 19th century, leaving the mansion as one of the few preserved examples of that era's residential architecture in the immediate area. The site holds particular significance in Pakistan's national narrative as the birthplace of the country's founding father.
