Keenjhar Lake

Keenjhar Lake, Pakistan's largest freshwater lake, lies about 130 km from Karachi in Thatta District, reached in roughly 2.5-3 hours by road via the M-9 Motorway and a local turn northeast toward the lake, and is commonly combined with a same-day visit to Thatta and the Makli Necropolis given the short additional distance between them. The lake supplies drinking water to Karachi and Thatta and supports a significant population of migratory waterbirds between November and March, drawing birdwatchers alongside families seeking a boat ride and a break from the heat of the plains. Small motorboats operate from the lakeside jetties, offering short rides across the water past reed beds and fishing communities, and a handful of simple restaurants and rest houses along the shore serve fish dishes drawn from the lake itself. A day trip pairs naturally with Thatta and Makli earlier in the day, arriving at Keenjhar in the afternoon for a boat ride and lakeside lunch before the return drive to Karachi; visitors focused specifically on birdwatching should aim for an early morning arrival instead, when bird activity is highest. The November-March period is by far the best time to visit, both for the migratory bird season and for markedly more comfortable temperatures than the intense heat of the Sindh summer.
