Boating at Manchar Lake

Boating at Manchar Lake, about 18km from Sehwan Sharif in the Jamshoro and Dadu Districts of Sindh, is a boat trip across Pakistan's largest natural freshwater lake, passing the houseboat communities of Mohana fishing families who live permanently on the water. Boats are hired directly at the shore near Sehwan and cover the open lake as well as areas near the moored houseboats; the activity requires no particular fitness and suits most ages, though care should be taken stepping into and out of the boat. As at other Sindh lakes, boatmen are independent operators from the fishing communities themselves rather than employees of a formal tour company, so their local knowledge of safe channels and current conditions is generally strong even without formal certification. There is no organised safety briefing; travellers should confirm the boat's condition and, where possible, ask about a life jacket before departure, since informal operators do not always carry them as standard. Manchar's water levels and quality can fluctuate with irrigation flows and season, and the lake's open water can turn choppy in windy conditions, so checking with the boatman about conditions on the day is worthwhile. Winter months offer cooler, more comfortable travel conditions and typically higher lake levels, making October to March the preferred season, while the shadeless open water in summer heat is considerably less pleasant.
