National Museum Lagos

The National Museum Lagos sits on Awolowo Road in Onikan, Lagos Island, close to Tafawa Balewa Square and the National Theatre. Opened in 1957 under the colonial Antiquities Service and expanded after Nigerian independence in 1960, it is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in West Africa. The permanent collection is organized thematically across several halls: an archaeology wing displaying Nok terracotta figures dated to the first millennium BCE, an ethnography wing covering the material culture of the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa-Fulani and other Nigerian peoples, and a colonial and independence history wing. The single most visited object is the bullet-riddled Mercedes-Benz in which General Murtala Mohammed was assassinated in a failed coup in February 1976, preserved in a glass enclosure. The museum also holds cast reproductions of Benin bronzes (the originals remain largely in European collections following the 1897 British punitive expedition), Ife terracotta head replicas, carved masks, textiles including aso-oke and adire cloth, and traditional musical instruments. Signage is arranged in a broadly chronological sequence from prehistory through the transatlantic slave trade to independence, though the building's colonial-era layout means visitors move between adjoining rooms rather than a single linear path. The structure itself is a low-rise mid-20th-century public building, functional rather than monumental, and has seen only incremental refurbishment since the 1980s; several display cases and lighting fixtures show visible wear. A small crafts market operates in the museum courtyard, selling beadwork, wood carvings and textiles from vendors independent of the museum administration.
