Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina

The Cathedral Church of Christ stands on the Marina in Lagos Island, the historic waterfront strip that formed the commercial heart of colonial Lagos. The congregation traces its founding to 1867, making it one of the oldest Anglican churches in Nigeria, and the cathedral serves as the seat of the Bishop of Lagos within the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). The current cathedral building, completed in the early 20th century after earlier structures on the site were outgrown or damaged, combines Gothic Revival massing with tropical adaptations such as louvered windows and a steeply pitched roof suited to Lagos's rainy season. Inside, the nave holds commemorative plaques and stained glass memorializing early Nigerian clergy and colonial-era parishioners, along with a carved wooden bishop's chair and choir stalls dating from the church's early decades. The cathedral has hosted state occasions over its history, including services connected to national mourning and independence commemorations, reflecting its role as a civic as well as religious landmark in Lagos. Its curatorial character is that of a working cathedral rather than a museum: historical fittings remain in active liturgical use, and the building has undergone periodic maintenance, including roof and masonry repairs, rather than a single formal restoration campaign. The surrounding Marina district has been substantially redeveloped with modern high-rises, leaving the cathedral as one of the few surviving low-rise colonial-era structures on the street, visually distinct from the office towers around it.
