Holy Cross Cathedral

Holy Cross Cathedral sits just off Odunlami Street on Lagos Island and serves as the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos. Catholic missionary activity in Lagos dates to the 1860s, and the parish that grew into today's cathedral was established in the following decades as the faith spread among returnee ex-slave communities and local converts. The present cathedral building was constructed in the early 20th century and consecrated in 1939, replacing an earlier and smaller church structure on the same grounds. Its architecture follows a restrained Gothic Revival style with twin bell towers, pointed arch windows and a vaulted nave ceiling, built primarily from imported and local masonry suited to the tropical climate. Inside, the cathedral houses statuary, an ornate altar and stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes, along with memorials to early Nigerian bishops and clergy who led the diocese through the colonial and independence periods. As the cathedral of an active archdiocese, its presentation is liturgical rather than curated as a museum exhibit: historic furnishings remain in daily use for Mass, ordinations and other diocesan ceremonies. The building has undergone periodic structural maintenance, including roof and tower repairs, but retains its original 1939 form and footprint. Its location amid the dense commercial redevelopment of central Lagos Island makes it, together with the nearby Anglican Cathedral Church of Christ, one of the few surviving pre-independence religious landmarks still standing on their original colonial-era plots.
