Pulitzer Amsterdam

Pulitzer Amsterdam extends across 25 individual 17th and 18th-century canal houses on the Prinsengracht (315-331) and the adjacent Keizersgracht, linked internally via a series of passageways, bridges, and gardens. The property sits in the southern Jordaan, one of Amsterdam's most characterful and walkable residential neighbourhoods. The Anne Frank House is a five-minute walk north along the Prinsengracht, the Westerkerk is three minutes away, and the Jordaan's independent boutiques and brown cafes are immediately accessible on foot. Tram line 13, 14, or 17 on the Westermarkt connects to Amsterdam Centraal in approximately ten minutes.

Each of the 25 canal houses retains its individual proportions, gable profile, and layout, creating a deliberately asymmetric property where no two rooms are identical. Some houses date from the 1600s, others from the 1700s, and each features its own staircase, original floor plan, and architectural details including exposed timber beams, brick walls, and period mantelpieces. The hotel opened in the 1960s under the Pulitzer name and was fully redesigned in 2016 by Dutch interior designer Jacu Strauss, who restored period features while introducing a warmly eclectic contemporary aesthetic based on Dutch craftsmanship and art collecting.

The 225 rooms and suites are categorised as Classic, Deluxe, Premium, and Suites, spread across the 25 houses. Canal view rooms look directly onto the Prinsengracht from low sash windows — the proximity to the water is particularly striking and the vantage point at water level is unusual among Amsterdam hotels. Superior rooms in the internal houses face the garden courtyard. All rooms feature bespoke Dutch-designed furniture, Nespresso machines, and oversized showers.

The Pulitzer's Restaurant & Bar serves all-day Dutch and European cuisine in a ground-floor space with garden access, drawing on locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Breakfast is a full buffet supplemented by à la carte hot dishes, and the bar operates until midnight with a cocktail programme developed around Dutch genever and botanicals. The hotel operates its own vintage steam-powered Pulitzer boat from the private canal mooring — available for private hire and used for guided canal tours for guests.

The garden is a private enclosed courtyard linking several of the houses and is one of the most pleasant outdoor spaces offered by any Amsterdam hotel. The Pulitzer does not have a spa or pool, but it maintains arrangements with a nearby fitness studio, and the concierge can arrange access to partner wellness facilities in the city.

The hotel's character — intimate despite its room count, residential in feel, eclectic in style — attracts a predominantly leisure clientele interested in Amsterdam's cultural life. Bicycle rental is available from the hotel, which is ideally positioned to explore the Jordaan, the canal ring, and the museum quarter by bike. The Jordaan cultural festival in September and the Grachtenfestival classical music event, which stages performances on floating stages outside the Pulitzer each August, make the hotel particularly sought-after in late summer.
