Alkmaar Cheese Market
Alkmaar's famous Friday morning cheese market is one of the most colourful and authentic traditional events in the Netherlands. From April to September every Friday 10:00-13:00, cheese porters (kaasdragers) in white uniforms and coloured guild hats carry rounds of Gouda and Edam on wooden barrows to the 14th-century Waag weigh house. The ceremony is unchanged since the 17th century. Alkmaar's historic centre, with its fine canals and churches, is also excellent.
Volendam, Marken, and Edam Triangle
A classic North Holland trio of IJsselmeer villages — traditional, photogenic, and full of history. Beemster Polder (UNESCO World Heritage)
The Beemster Polder (1612) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the world's first large-scale example of land reclamation from a lake. Dutch engineers drained the Beemster Lake using 43 windmills in 1612, creating an extraordinary rational landscape of perfect rectangular fields, canals, and roads based on Renaissance planning principles. Today it remains almost unchanged from 1612, with Beemster cheese farms, traditional farms, and the beautiful village of Middenbeemster at its centre.
