St Andrew's Church on Rue d'Angleterre in Tangier, northern Morocco, is an Anglican church built in the 1890s for Tangier's British community, on land granted by Sultan Hassan I. It was consecrated in 1905 and served the many British diplomats, merchants and residents who lived in the city when it was a major European diplomatic post. The church is notable for blending English church design with Moroccan decoration. Its plan is that of a small Victorian parish church, but the interior is richly ornamented in Moorish style, with horseshoe arches, zellige tilework, carved plasterwork and painted decoration. The Lord's Prayer is inscribed in Arabic around the chancel arch, and memorial plaques on the walls honour British residents. The attached cemetery is a large part of the attraction, a quiet walled garden with graves that span the 19th and 20th centuries. Among those buried there are the journalist Walter Harris, the Scottish soldier Kaid Sir Harry Maclean, who served the sultan, and many diplomats, writers and sailors. The headstones and shaded paths give a vivid view of the expatriate world of old Tangier. The church remains an active Anglican place of worship with a small congregation, and its upkeep has depended on the congregation and on donations. The building and cemetery are in fair to good condition, though the garden is sometimes weathered by humidity. A caretaker usually opens the gate in the morning, and visitors are welcome to enter quietly outside services.
