Catemaco and Los Tuxtlas

Catemaco lies about 172 km south of Veracruz port, reached in 3 to 3.75 hours by direct ADO/AU bus from the port's CAAV terminal or by rental car via Highway 180 south. Because of the distance, a day trip benefits from an early departure, arriving in town by late morning to arrange a boat tour on Laguna Catemaco directly at the lakefront pier, where operators run trips out to the Isla de los Changos (monkey island), home to a colony of Thai stump-tailed macaques introduced for research decades ago, and past smaller volcanic islets and lakeside shrines. The lake sits within the Los Tuxtlas biosphere reserve, sometimes called Mexico's 'green hills' region for its cloud-forest vegetation, unusual for the tropical Gulf coast, and boat routes typically also pass a waterfall accessible from the water. After the lake tour, lunch options cluster along the malecon, where lakeside restaurants serve fresh tegogolo, a local lake snail, and grilled fish. Catemaco's long-standing reputation for traditional healers (brujos) draws some visitors to the town's herbal markets and healing shops, though this is optional beyond the core lake-and-nature itinerary. Given the roughly 3.5-hour trip each way, an overnight stay is worth considering for those who want unhurried time on the lake; travelers doing it as a single day trip should plan a return bus or drive by mid-afternoon. November through April brings drier, less humid conditions than the tropical summer, making boat trips and lakeside walking more comfortable.
