Jalcomulco - Whitewater Rafting Village

Jalcomulco lies about 95 km west of Veracruz port and 28 to 30 km from Xalapa, reached in roughly two hours by rental car from the port or 45 to 60 minutes by combi from Xalapa's Rafael Murillo Vidal terminal area; many visitors instead book organized rafting-tour transport directly from Xalapa that bundles the ride with equipment and guides. A typical day starts early, since rafting outfitters generally run morning departures to take advantage of calmer water and cooler temperatures before the valley heats up; groups spend two to three hours on the Rio Antigua (also called the Rio Pescados), navigating rapids that range from gentle Class I-II floats to more technical Class III-IV stretches depending on the season and recent rainfall. After the river run, the afternoon is typically spent drying off and eating in the village itself, where riverside restaurants serve grilled meats, fresh fish, and local aguas frescas; some visitors add a swim in a calmer river pool or a short walk through the village's rustic streets before heading back to Xalapa or the coast. Jalcomulco's location at the base of the Sierra Madre Oriental foothills gives it a noticeably warmer microclimate than nearby, higher-elevation Xalapa, so lighter clothing suits the valley floor even when Xalapa itself is cool. Late summer through winter, when rains keep the river level higher, produces the most reliable rafting conditions; drier spring months can leave some sections too low for the more technical rapids.
