The Presa de Atlangatepec reservoir, also known as Laguna de Atlangatepec, in Atlangatepec Municipality, Tlaxcala, offers flat-water kayaking across a 3-6km stretch of open water. The activity requires no prior paddling experience and suits most fitness levels, including families with older children, though solo child paddlers are not permitted and all paddlers must wear a life jacket. Kayaks, paddles and life jackets are provided by the local boat and kayak rental cooperative that operates from the reservoir's boat launch; visitors should bring sun protection and a change of clothes in case of splashing. The cooperative is made up of local operators familiar with the reservoir's wind patterns and shoreline, though it does not carry formal international guiding certifications typical of larger commercial operators. Before setting out, staff give a basic safety briefing covering paddle strokes, capsizing procedure and the boundaries of the rental area, and staff monitor conditions from shore, restricting rentals when winds pick up and chop makes the open water unsafe for casual paddlers. Kayaking is possible year-round, but the calmest water and clearest skies come November through April; the June-to-October rainy season brings afternoon winds and occasional storms that can make the reservoir choppy, so morning outings are preferable in that period.
