Rappelling at Cascadas de Atlihuetzia

The Cascada de Atlihuetzia, a roughly 30-meter waterfall on the Zahuapan River in Yauhquemehcan Municipality, Tlaxcala, is the setting for guided rappelling descents run by local ecotourism guides. The activity is open to first-time rappellers with reasonable fitness and no fear of heights; children typically need to meet a minimum age and weight set by the guides, and anyone with a fear of heights or limited upper-body strength should discuss the descent with guides beforehand. Harness, helmet and rope are provided; participants bring closed-toe shoes with good grip, a change of clothes for the wet canyon environment, and a waterproof bag for phones and valuables. The guides are local operators experienced with the Atlihuetzia canyon's rock and water conditions rather than internationally certified canyoning outfits, and they set fixed anchor points for each descent. Sessions open with a safety briefing on harness fit, rappel device use and hand signals, and a guide is stationed at both the top and bottom of the falls throughout each descent to manage the rope and assist any participant who needs to stop partway down. The waterfall runs fullest from June to October, which makes the rock faces slicker and the flow stronger, so the calmer conditions from November to May are generally preferred for rappelling; guides may cancel descents after heavy rain when flow and rock conditions become unsafe. A typical guided session runs 2-3 hours and includes multiple descents.
