El Rincon del Pejelagarto

El Rincon del Pejelagarto is a no-frills cantina-restaurant a short walk from the Plaza de Armas in the Zona Luz, built around Tabasco's signature dish, pejelagarto, an armored freshwater fish native to the state's rivers and lagoons, served smoked, grilled or in tamales alongside cold domestic beer. The crowd is largely local families and groups at lunch, shifting toward a more adult, beer-drinking crowd by evening, with plastic or simple wooden tables and no attempt at a polished bar aesthetic. There is no music program beyond a radio playing regional cumbia and ranchera in the background, and no dance floor. The drinks list is limited to beer, soft drinks and a few basic cocktails, secondary to the food, which is the clear draw for both locals and curious visitors wanting to try the fish that has become a symbol of Tabasco cuisine. Hours run daily from noon to 11PM, busiest at lunch and again in the early evening; there is no cover charge and no reservation system, with tables available on a first-come basis.
