Paraíso and the Gulf Coast

Paraíso sits on the Gulf coast about 70 km northwest of Villahermosa, roughly an hour by ADO or Cardesa bus from the CAAT terminal or by rental car along Highway 187. As Tabasco's principal coastal town, it offers day-trippers access to Playa Miramar, a working public beach with a small malecón lined by seafood palapas, and, a short taxi ride away, Puerto Ceiba on Laguna Mecoacán, where local boatmen run trips through mangrove channels to see oyster-cultivation platforms and finish with fresh oysters at a lagoon-front restaurant. Visitors should expect brown, sediment-influenced Gulf water rather than clear Caribbean-style sea, since Tabasco's coast sits at the mouths of several major rivers; the appeal here is the working coastal culture, fresh seafood and lagoon wildlife rather than resort-style beach amenities. A typical day trip leaves Villahermosa in the morning, spends a couple of hours at Playa Miramar or Playa Pico de Oro, continues to Puerto Ceiba for a lagoon boat trip and lunch, and returns to Villahermosa by early evening. November through April brings the driest, calmest conditions; the June-to-November hurricane season can bring rough surf and heavy rain that make a coastal day trip inadvisable.
