Yumká Ecological Reserve

Yumká lies about 17 km east of central Villahermosa in the Ranchería El Faisán, easily reached by combi from Parque Juárez or by taxi in 20-30 minutes. The reserve is divided into three connected sections: a jungle walking trail through recreated selva tabasqueña with howler monkeys, tapirs and native birds visible from raised boardwalks; a savanna area toured by open tram, where giraffes, rhinos, zebras and other African and Asian species roam in a shared, semi-open setting alongside native Tabasco fauna; and a lagoon section navigated by boat, home to manatees, crocodiles and waterfowl. A full visit, covering all three sections at an unhurried pace, takes 3-4 hours. The jungle trail is walked on foot, the savanna is toured aboard the park's tram (included in admission), and the lagoon boat trip runs on a schedule through the day, so timing an early arrival helps secure a spot on the earlier boat departures before midday heat sets in. There is a simple cafeteria near the entrance for lunch, though bringing water for the jungle walk is worthwhile since shade is inconsistent. Because Yumká combines rainforest, savanna and wetland habitats in one site, it works well as a half-day trip that can be paired with a Villahermosa city morning or afternoon.
