Tlaxcala City and the Basílica de Ocotlán

Tlaxcala City sits about 40 km northeast of Puebla City in the neighboring state of Tlaxcala, a 45-60 minute trip by bus from the CAPU terminal or by rental car via Highway 119. The compact colonial center is anchored by the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Ocotlán, a twin-towered Baroque church on a hill overlooking the city, known for its elaborately gilded Churrigueresque interior. A morning visit suits the basilica and the short walk down into the historic center, where the Palacio de Gobierno holds murals depicting Tlaxcalan history, and the adjoining Plaza de la Constitución is lined with colonial-era arcades. The nearby Ex-Convento de San Francisco, one of the earliest monasteries built in the Americas, and its attached regional museum round out a morning of sightseeing. Afternoons can include a walk through the covered market for local textiles and a stop at a restaurant serving Tlaxcalan specialties such as escamoles or mixiotes, dishes less commonly found in Puebla City itself. Food stalls around the plaza serve tacos and tlacoyos, and several sit-down restaurants specialize in regional Tlaxcalan cuisine. Tlaxcala City is a year-round destination and pairs naturally with a stop at the nearby Cacaxtla and Xochitécatl archaeological sites, both roughly 30 minutes further south, making it possible to combine a colonial city visit with pre-Hispanic ruins in a single day.
