Cholula and the Great Pyramid

Cholula sits just 12 km southwest of Puebla City, a 20-30 minute ride by colectivo along Avenida Reforma, taxi, or rental car. The Great Pyramid of Cholula (Tlachihualtepetl), the largest pyramid by volume in the world, is topped by the 16th-century Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and honeycombed with roughly 8 km of excavated tunnels open to visitors. A morning arrival allows time to walk the tunnel system and the small on-site museum before the midday sun builds; the afternoon is well spent climbing to the hilltop church, where clear days reveal Popocatépetl looming to the east. San Pedro Cholula's zócalo and the adjoining Ex-Convento de San Gabriel, one of the earliest Franciscan monasteries in the Americas, sit a short walk from the pyramid and fill out a half-day itinerary; San Andrés Cholula's Parroquia de San Andrés Apóstol and the plaza around it make a second stop for travelers with more time. Street stalls near the pyramid entrance sell cemitas, tlayoyos, and fresh-pressed juice, and the portales around the zócalo hold sit-down restaurants serving mole poblano and chiles en nogada in season. Cholula is a year-round destination, though late afternoon light favors photographs of the volcano from the summit church, and weekday mornings avoid the weekend crowds that build around midday. The full circuit -- tunnels, museum, hilltop church, and a wander through San Pedro's center -- comfortably fits a single day trip from Puebla City.
