Atlixco: Flower Fields and Cerro San Miguel

Atlixco sits about 30 km south of Puebla City, a 40-50 minute trip by colectivo, second-class bus, or rental car via Highway 190. The town is best known for its commercial flower farms, which surround Atlixco with rows of cempasúchil (marigold) ahead of Día de Muertos in late October, alongside year-round greenhouses growing roses and other cut flowers for the domestic market. A morning arrival suits a walk through the colonial center, with its arcaded zócalo and the Ex-Convento de San Francisco, before continuing to Cerro San Miguel, the hill overlooking town that can be reached on foot via a stepped path or by the cable car (funicular) that runs up its slope. From the summit chapel and viewpoint, the whole Atlixco valley spreads out below, with Popocatépetl visible on clear days. Afternoons can include a stop at one of the flower farms open to visitors during bloom season, or a wander through the covered market for local sweets and mole poblano-style dishes. Food stalls around the zócalo serve cemitas and regional antojitos, and several sit-down restaurants specialize in mixiotes and barbacoa. Atlixco is a pleasant year-round visit for the town center and hilltop viewpoint, but late September through October is the peak window for the flower fields, when the surrounding farmland turns orange and gold; this period also draws the largest crowds and traffic on weekends, so a weekday visit is easier.
