Zócalo de Cholula

The Zócalo de Cholula, fronted by the arcaded Portal Guerrero, is the central plaza of San Pedro Cholula, a compact colonial town five minutes from the Gran Pirámide. The square is smaller and more relaxed than Puebla's main Zócalo, ringed by low colonial buildings, a municipal palace, and shaded arcades filled with local food stalls and juice vendors rather than large commercial chains. Visitors typically spend about an hour here, walking the perimeter, browsing the arcade stalls, and sitting on the plaza's benches beneath its trees. The square doubles as a practical base for exploring Cholula, since taxis, moto-taxis, and combis to the pyramid and surrounding sights all pass through or near it. The best photo angle is from the plaza's center looking toward the Portal Guerrero arcade, where the colonial arches frame the street beyond. Evenings are the liveliest time, when food stalls selling elotes, cemitas, and regional snacks fill the arcades and local families gather after the day's heat has passed. Weekday afternoons are quieter, making them a good time for a relaxed coffee or an unhurried walk. The plaza sees a noticeable increase in visitors during Cholula's patron saint festivals and the well-known Quetzalcóatl fireworks celebration in September, when the square becomes a focal point for processions and events. Because it is a public plaza, there is no cost or fixed schedule for visiting.
