Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios sits directly atop the mound of the Gran Pirámide de Cholula, built by Spanish colonizers in the 16th century over the ruins of the pre-Hispanic temple that once crowned the pyramid. The bright yellow-and-white facade and single bell tower are visible from across the Cholula valley, and the church functions as both an active parish and one of the region's best-known viewpoints. Visitors reach it either by climbing the exterior stairway up the grassy pyramid mound or by walking through the interior tunnel system from the base of the pyramid. Inside, the church is modest in scale, with a simple nave and an image of the Virgen de los Remedios venerated by local pilgrims, and a visit to the interior alone takes only 15 to 20 minutes. The real draw is the churchyard terrace surrounding the building, which offers unobstructed views over San Pedro Cholula's rooftops toward Puebla and, on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Late afternoon is the best time for these views, when the light is warmer and the volcanoes are more likely to be visible before evening cloud cover builds. The site draws its heaviest crowds in the morning, when tour groups climb up after touring the pyramid tunnels below, while the terrace tends to quiet down again in the hour before sunset. Because the church shares its base with the archaeological site, most visitors combine the climb with a pyramid tunnel tour rather than visiting the church in isolation.
