Grutas de Atepolihui

Grutas de Atepolihui is a cave system a few kilometers outside Cuetzalan, explored on guided walks that lead visitors through chambers of limestone formations, underground streams, and, in the deeper sections, small waterfalls fed by the same cloud-forest hydrology that feeds the region's rivers. Local guides, required for entry, lead groups through a defined circuit lasting roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, pointing out stalactite and stalagmite formations and, depending on the season, colonies of bats resting in the upper chambers. Visitors should expect some sections with low clearance, wet or slippery rock, and shallow water crossings, so appropriate footwear and a willingness to get muddy are part of the experience. The caves are cooler than the surface and cave in near-total darkness away from the guide's lighting, so bringing a personal flashlight as backup is advisable even though guides typically provide illumination. Morning visits tend to be best, both because the trip out from Cuetzalan is easier before the day's heat and because the caves get busier as more tour groups arrive from town later in the day. The rainy season, roughly June through October, increases water levels inside the caves and can affect which sections are accessible, so conditions vary more than at a purely built attraction. The experience pairs naturally with a visit to nearby waterfalls or hanging bridges around Cuetzalan, since all three sit within a similar distance of the town center and share a moto-taxi or taxi route.
