Saltillo, the capital of neighboring Coahuila, lies 85 kilometers west of Monterrey, about a 1.25-1.5 hour drive via Highway 40, with frequent first-class coaches from operators such as Turimex, Autobuses Americanos, and Transportes del Norte departing roughly every 30-60 minutes for visitors without a car. A day trip typically begins at the colonial cathedral and Plaza de Armas in the morning, when the historic center is at its coolest and least crowded, before continuing to the Museo del Desierto, a natural history museum focused on the region's desert ecosystems and paleontology that can take an hour or two to see in full. Afternoons are well spent browsing Saltillo's serape weaving workshops and shops, since the city has a centuries-long tradition of producing the colorful woven blankets, before a late lunch of regional Coahuila dishes in the historic center. Visitors with extra time or their own transport often extend the trip a short drive further south to Arteaga, a cooler mountain town known for its apple orchards, cider, and preserves, particularly appealing during the September-October harvest. Because Saltillo sits at a higher elevation than Monterrey, its climate stays comfortable across most of the year, making this a viable day trip in any season, though the cooler mountain air around Arteaga is most enjoyable in autumn. Coach schedules run frequently enough that the return trip rarely requires advance planning beyond checking the last departure time from Saltillo's bus terminal.
