A typical itinerary starts at the Huasteca canyon in the morning, when the light is best for photographing its sheer limestone walls and cooler temperatures suit rock climbers and rappellers working the canyon's popular routes; visitors without climbing gear can still walk the canyon floor and its roadside viewpoints. By midday, the trip continues to Chipinque Ecological Park, where pine-oak forest trails climb the slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental to a lookout point with a sweeping view over the entire Monterrey metro area; the park's visitor center area has a small restaurant serving casual Mexican fare for a late lunch. October through April offers the coolest, most comfortable temperatures for both the canyon walk and the Chipinque hike, since summer heat can make the exposed canyon trail and the steeper forest paths tiring by early afternoon. Because the two sites are reached separately, visitors on a tight schedule often choose one or the other rather than both, or hire an organized half-day tour that bundles transport between them with a guide.
