Potrero Chico

Potrero Chico lies 60 kilometers north of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, about an hour's drive via Highway 85 to the town of Hidalgo followed by three kilometers of local roads to the canyon entrance; organized climbing tours that include gear and transport also depart from Monterrey for visitors without their own vehicle. The limestone canyon holds more than 650 bolted sport-climbing routes, over 140 of them multipitch, rising in a natural amphitheater that draws climbers of all levels, from single-pitch routes near the canyon floor to full-day multipitch lines on the higher walls. A typical day trip starts early, since climbing on the sun-exposed faces is most comfortable before mid-morning; non-climbers can instead walk the canyon floor trail beneath the towering walls, which offers close views of the rock formations without technical gear. By early afternoon, most visitors head back into Hidalgo for lunch, where small family-run restaurants around the town plaza serve regional Nuevo Leon dishes such as cabrito and machacado. November through March brings the cooler temperatures that make climbing and canyon walking most comfortable, since summer heat on the exposed rock can become dangerous by midday. Climbers planning multipitch routes should budget a full day and start at first light, while those visiting only to walk the canyon or photograph the climbers can manage the outing in a half-day.
