Presa La Boca (Rodrigo Gomez Dam)

Presa La Boca, officially the Rodrigo Gomez Dam, sits 40 kilometers southeast of Monterrey between the towns of Santiago and Allende, reached in 45-55 minutes by car via Highway 85 followed by local roads along the reservoir shoreline; organized kayak tours with hotel pickup from Monterrey are also available. The 455-hectare reservoir, built in the early 1960s and framed by the pine-covered slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental, is Nuevo Leon's most popular inland waterfront, drawing visitors for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sport fishing, and lakeside dining. A typical day starts in the morning with equipment rental from one of the outfitters along the shoreline, when the water is calmest and temperatures are still comfortable for paddling; by midday, many visitors move to one of the palapa restaurants overlooking the lake for grilled fish or regional dishes such as cabrito. Afternoons can be spent fishing from the shore or a rented boat, or simply relaxing at one of the small waterfront viewpoints before the return drive to Monterrey. The reservoir is close enough to Santiago's own Pueblo Magico center that many visitors combine the two, spending the morning on the water and the afternoon in the plaza, or the reverse. March through October brings the warm weather needed for swimming and paddling, while the cooler months are quieter but still scenic for a lakeside walk or meal without water activities. Weekday visits are notably less crowded than weekends, when Monterrey residents make the reservoir a popular escape.
