Montemorelos Citrus Country

Montemorelos lies 75 kilometers southeast of Monterrey, about a 1-1.25 hour drive via Highway 85, with regional coach lines also running from Monterrey's Central de Autobuses for visitors without a car. Known as Mexico's orange capital, the town sits amid citrus and pecan orchards, and a typical day trip starts with a morning walk around its colonial plaza before continuing to one of the nearby orchards for a guided tour of the orange harvest and processing, best scheduled for the morning while temperatures are cooler and the orchards are at their most active. Roadside stands along Highway 85 and around the plaza sell fresh-squeezed orange juice, marmalades, and other citrus preserves, making a mid-morning or early-afternoon stop worthwhile before heading back to Monterrey. Lunch is typically taken in town, where small restaurants serve regional Nuevo Leon dishes alongside citrus-based desserts unique to the area. November through March is the peak orange harvest season and the best time to see the orchards in full activity, though the plaza and roadside stands operate year-round for a shorter, lower-key visit outside those months. Because the drive itself takes over an hour each way, this works well either as a standalone half-day trip focused on the orchards and plaza, or as a stop combined with Linares further south for a fuller day exploring southern Nuevo Leon's citrus country.
