Cerro de los Idolos Pyramid Climb, Malinalco

The climb to the Cerro de los Idolos archaeological zone begins at the site entrance on Calle Amajac in Malinalco's Barrio Santa Monica, a walkable distance from the town center, where an entrance fee is paid at the gate; the site is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last access to the ruins at 4:30 PM, and closed Mondays. From the entrance, the climb covers roughly 1km one way, rising about 125m over 426 stone steps to the hilltop temple complex. The steps are worn stone, largely unshaded, and steep enough that the ascent typically takes 30-45 minutes at a steady pace, with the return descent requiring equal care given the uneven, sometimes slippery surface. There is no technical scrambling or exposure risk, but the sustained stair climb at altitude makes it more strenuous than its short distance suggests. The principal landmark is the Cuauhcalli, or House of the Eagles, a Mexica temple carved directly into the hillside bedrock, one of very few rock-cut structures of its kind in Mexico, along with several other structures within the walled precinct at the summit. There is no realistic partial turn-around point, since the site and its views are only accessible from the top of the full staircase. No water, food, or shelter is available along the steps themselves, though restrooms and a small ticket area exist at the base; carrying 1-1.5 litres of water is advisable given the sun exposure and exertion of the climb.
