Bay of Banderas Whale Watching

Banderas Bay, the large natural bay on which Puerto Vallarta sits, becomes one of Mexico's premier whale-watching destinations each winter as humpback whales migrate south from Alaskan and Californian feeding grounds to breed and calve in its warm, sheltered waters between roughly November and March. Tours depart from the Puerto Vallarta marina on boats ranging from small pangas to larger catamarans, with trained naturalist guides pointing out breaching, tail-slapping, and spy-hopping behavior, and some operators use hydrophones to let passengers listen to whale song underwater. A typical tour runs three to four hours, departing either in the morning or early afternoon, and often combines whale sightings with stops for snorkeling or views of the bay's coastline and the Marietas Islands in the distance. Morning departures generally offer calmer water and better visibility for spotting distant blows and breaches. January and February mark the peak of the season, when the highest concentration of whales, including newborn calves, is present in the bay, and demand for tours is correspondingly highest.
