Pachuca Reloj Monumental and Mural District

Pachuca de Soto's Plaza Independencia is dominated by the Reloj Monumental, a pink-stone clock tower built for Mexico's centennial, with the city's hillside colonias rising behind it, several of which host large-scale murals as part of the Barrio Meximoxi mural district. The plaza frame places the tower against the sky from the square's open center, while the hillside murals are best captured with a longer lens from an elevated point across the valley, compressing the colorful house facades into a dense mosaic. Evening is the strongest time to shoot, when the Reloj Monumental is illuminated against the darkening sky and the hillside murals catch the last warm light of the day before streetlights take over; overcast afternoons also work well for the murals, since flat light reduces glare off the painted facades. The plaza and mural district are photographable year-round, with no strong seasonal variation beyond typical central-Mexican dry and rainy seasons. The plaza sees steady foot traffic throughout the day and is busiest on evenings and weekends, so a fast lens helps handhold shots of the illuminated tower without a tripod, which can be awkward to use in the crowded square.
