El Chico National Park Rock Formations

Parque Nacional El Chico, in the Mineral del Chico municipality, is one of Mexico's oldest protected forests, known for volcanic rock towers such as Penas Las Monjas and Los Frailes rising above a dense pine and oak-cloud forest. The strongest compositions place a rock tower in the foreground against layered pine ridges receding into the distance, or use a low angle looking up the sheer rock faces favored by local climbers. Golden hour, shortly after sunrise or before sunset, rakes low light across the towers and picks out texture in the rock while backlighting the pine canopy; midday sun in the high-elevation forest tends to produce harsh, contrasty shadows between the trees. The clearest skies fall between November and April, when the rainy season's afternoon cloud buildup is absent and long-distance views from the rock towers extend across the pine ridges. The park sees moderate weekend traffic from Pachuca, concentrated at the main overlooks and picnic areas, so reaching a formation before mid-morning secures an unobstructed tripod position. Access to the base of most formations is via marked forest trails from park parking areas; some, like Las Monjas, require a short, sometimes steep climb. There is a park entrance fee, and warm layers are worth carrying given the elevation, which keeps mornings cold even in the dry season.
