Troncones Beach Golden Hour Surf

Troncones' long, largely undeveloped beach break faces the open Pacific, giving an unobstructed westward view for both wide panoramas of the palm-lined shore and tighter shots of breaking waves and surfers. Golden hour is the strongest window, when the low sun sits behind or to the side of the camera and backlights the spray thrown off breaking waves, silhouetting surfers against the bright water and warm sky; shooting into the light from the waterline produces the most dramatic spray shots. May through October brings the biggest, most consistent surf for action photography, while the calmer November-to-April season suits wider scenic shots of the empty beach and gentler shorebreak. The beach rarely feels crowded outside of a handful of surf breaks favored by local surfers and surf-school groups, so finding open sand for a tripod is generally easy even at golden hour. There is no entry fee or access restriction to the public beach, and tripods are unrestricted on the sand, though photographers working close to the shorebreak should expect spray and should protect gear with a waterproof housing or rain cover.
