Playa La Ropa Sunset

Playa La Ropa's broad, palm-fringed beach curves along Zihuatanejo bay facing roughly southwest, putting the setting sun directly over open water for much of the year and giving a clean, unobstructed sunset frame with beachfront palapas, small hotels, and fishing boats silhouetted along the shoreline. The strongest light comes in the final twenty minutes before sunset, when the sun sits low over the horizon and backlights the palm fronds and boat silhouettes, followed by a short but often colorful afterglow once the sun drops below the water. November through April brings the clearest, haze-free sunset skies, while the rainy season's afternoon storm clouds can produce more dramatic color when they clear in time for sunset, though results are less predictable. The beach is popular with sunset diners at its restaurants and hotels, so the sand directly in front of the row of beachfront palapas fills with loungers and diners by late afternoon; photographers wanting an unobstructed tripod position generally do better at the beach's quieter northern or southern ends. There is no entry fee to the public beach, and tripods are unrestricted on the sand, though photographers should stay clear of restaurant seating areas that extend onto the beach in the evening.
