Troncones

Troncones sits about 32 km northwest of Zihuatanejo, a 45-minute to 1-hour drive or taxi ride along the coastal highway toward La Union; a rental car or taxi is the most practical way to arrive since bus service to the village is limited. The destination is a long open beach with a consistent, beginner-friendly surf break running alongside quieter stretches of sand, and a handful of small surf schools along the shore rent boards and offer lessons for visitors making a day of it. A typical day starts with a morning surf lesson or beach walk while the swell and light are best, followed by a break for lunch at one of the village's simple beachfront restaurants serving fresh seafood, before an afternoon spent surfing independently, swimming, or exploring the scattered rocky points at either end of the beach. Because Troncones has no large resorts, the pace stays unhurried, and much of the day can be spent simply moving between the beach, a surf break, and a restaurant table rather than following a fixed itinerary. The surf is rideable year-round, but the more consistent swells associated with the wider Pacific hurricane season run from May through October, making those months the draw for more experienced surfers, while calmer conditions from November through April suit beginners and swimmers better. Given the 45-minute to 1-hour drive each way, departing Zihuatanejo by mid-morning allows a full day at the beach with enough daylight left for the return drive after the day's activities wind down.
