Nevado de Colima National Park

The Nevado de Colima National Park begins about 35 km north of Colima City, reached by a 1.5-hour drive through Comala and the village of La Yerbabuena before the road turns to unpaved forestry track for the final stretch to the lower trailheads. A car with reasonable clearance handles the paved sections comfortably, but the unpaved forestry road benefits from a higher-clearance vehicle or a hired driver familiar with the route, and many visitors join an organized day tour for the upper-elevation trails. The park protects pine-oak and pine-fir forest climbing toward the 4,260-meter Nevado summit, with the lower zones around El Fresnito and La Joya offering marked trails, cool mountain air, and views across the Colima valley toward the smoking cone of the neighboring Volcan de Fuego. A full day trip typically means an early morning departure from Colima City, arrival at the park mid-morning, several hours hiking the lower trails or driving forestry roads to a viewpoint, and a return before dark since the unpaved road is difficult to navigate at night. There are no restaurants or shops inside the park, so visitors pack food and water in Comala or Colima City before heading up; layered clothing is essential, as temperatures at altitude can sit 15-20 degrees Celsius below those in the valley even in the dry season. November through April brings the clearest skies and firmest trail conditions, while the rainy season turns the forestry road muddy and can obscure mountain views in cloud. Reaching the actual 4,260-meter summit requires a multi-day mountaineering trip with a guide, so day visitors should plan around the lower trailheads and viewpoints rather than the peak itself.
