La Campana Archaeological Zone

The La Campana Archaeological Zone sits about 4 km northwest of downtown Colima City, a 10-minute drive or taxi ride, making it one of the easiest day trips from the city center. City buses and colectivos running along Avenida Tecnologico also serve the site, and it is walkable from nearby northern neighborhoods in about 30-40 minutes for visitors who prefer to skip transport altogether. Managed by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the site preserves the remains of a pre-Hispanic settlement linked to the Capacha and later western Mexican cultures, with excavated pyramidal structures, a ballcourt, and residential platforms arranged around a central plaza. A small on-site museum displays ceramics and artifacts recovered from the surrounding shaft-tomb burials, offering context for the site before or after walking the grounds. A visit typically takes one to two hours: enough time to walk the marked paths among the main structures, read the interpretive signage, and browse the museum galleries. The site sits on open, largely unshaded ground, so an early morning visit is more comfortable than a midday one, particularly in the hotter months from March through May. Because the zone is close to downtown, it pairs easily with a broader Colima City day covering the Regional Museum of Colima Cultures and the city's central plaza, rather than requiring a dedicated half day on its own.
