Comala

Comala lies about 10 km north of Colima City, roughly a 20-minute drive by car or colectivo along a paved local road that climbs gently toward the foothills of the Nevado de Colima. Frequent shared vans depart from Colima City's center throughout the day, making the trip easy without a rental car. Known as one of Mexico's Pueblos Magicos and nicknamed the 'White Town of America' for its whitewashed colonial buildings, Comala centers on the Jardin Principal, a plaza framed by red-tile-roofed arcades, the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, and rows of open-air restaurants serving free botanas with every drink order. A morning is well spent browsing the plaza's artisan stalls for lacquered wood crafts and Comala-style ceramics, then walking a few blocks to see the town's murals and colonial facades. The Nogueras neighborhood, on the town's edge, holds the former hacienda and museum of muralist Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, worth an hour for its folk-art collection and gardens. Afternoons are the time to sit down for the town's signature dish, birria de res served with warm corn tortillas, alongside a glass of ponche, a warm fruit punch made with tejocote and raicilla. On clear days the Volcan de Fuego and Nevado de Colima are visible from the plaza's northern edge, best seen in early morning or late afternoon light. The dry season from November to April offers the most reliable visibility and comfortable walking temperatures, while the rainy season (June-October) brings lush green hillsides but a higher chance of afternoon showers. Most visitors treat Comala as a half-day trip, combining the town center with a short drive into the surrounding coffee-growing foothills, or pair it with a longer excursion toward the Nevado de Colima or the Volcan de Fuego viewpoints near La Yerbabuena.
