Baluarte de Santiago and the X'much Haltun Botanical Garden

The Baluarte de Santiago is a reconstructed corner bastion of the seventeenth-century city wall in San Francisco de Campeche whose interior courtyard has been given over to the X'much Haltun botanical garden, packing the fortified stone enclosure with palms, orchids, bromeliads and a small ornamental pond. The photographic interest lies in the contrast between soft tropical foliage and the heavy stone parapets surrounding it; a macro lens suits the orchids and bromeliads, while a 50mm prime frames foliage against the stonework and a wide-angle from the parapet takes in the whole courtyard. Because the space is enclosed by high walls, it stays in soft, even light through the middle of the day, from about 10:00 to 15:00, when the rest of the city is under harsh direct sun, making it a useful midday fallback. Foliage is densest from July to November, during the rainy season, though the garden is worth visiting year round. Entry is a nominal fee of about 20 MXN (approx USD 1), and the garden opens Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00. The courtyard is small and rarely crowded, so tripod use for close-up botanical work is straightforward, though a reflector or diffuser is more practical than a tripod in the confined space for controlling contrast on individual blooms.
