Hotel Socaire

Hotel Socaire occupies a converted centro house at Calle 55 No. 22, between Calle 12 and Calle 14, in the historic quarter of San Francisco de Campeche, Mexico. The house was reworked into a small hotel of about a dozen rooms arranged around an interior courtyard holding a plunge pool, with a rooftop terrace above that catches the evening breeze off the Gulf and looks across the flat roofs of the walled city towards the cathedral towers. The decorative approach is deliberately bright: walls in strong Mexican colours, patterned tiles, hammocks on the terrace, and locally made textiles and craftwork rather than the antique-heavy formality of the larger colonial hotels. Rooms fall into Standard, Superior, Double, and Suite categories, all air conditioned, most with tiled floors, high ceilings, and either courtyard or street outlooks; the suites add sitting space and more natural light. Breakfast is served in the courtyard, and while there is no full restaurant, the location makes that a minor issue, since Calle 59's concentration of restaurants and bars is a block and a half away and the Plaza de la Independencia and the cathedral are about three blocks north. The malecon and the Baluarte de Santiago with its walled botanical garden are both within a ten-minute walk, and the Puerta de Tierra sound-and-light show is a similar distance to the east. Rates typically run between MXN 950 and MXN 1,450 per night, positioning the hotel as a boutique-styled alternative at roughly a quarter of hacienda prices, and it has become a common recommendation for travellers who want design and a pool without the expense of the Luxury Collection properties. Service is small-scale and personal, handled by a compact reception team that arranges taxis, laundry, and day trips to Edzna, and the atmosphere suits couples and independent travellers rather than large families or business visitors.
