Hostal La Parroquia

Hostal La Parroquia occupies the upper floor of a colonial building at Calle 55 No. 8, between Calle 10 and Calle 12, in the walled city of San Francisco de Campeche, Mexico, above the long-running Parroquia cafe that gives the hostel its name and that has been a fixture of the historic centre for decades. The position is two blocks from the cathedral and the Plaza de la Independencia, a block from Calle 59 with its restaurants and evening crowds, and within a ten-minute walk of the malecon, the Baluarte de la Soledad, and the Puerta de Tierra where the sound-and-light show is staged. The hostel is among the oldest in Campeche state and its appeal is entirely practical: it offers the cheapest beds inside the walls, with dormitory places from roughly MXN 300 and simple private singles, doubles, and twin rooms with shared bathrooms up to about MXN 900. Facilities are basic. Dormitories are fan-cooled rather than air conditioned, which is a genuine consideration during the humid stretch from May to October, bathrooms are shared, and furnishings are worn. In exchange there is a shared kitchen, a common room, lockers, laundry service, wifi, and the cafe downstairs, which serves cheap breakfasts, coffee, and Campechano staples from early in the morning and functions as an informal meeting place for guests and residents alike. The hostel is a long-standing stop on the overland route between Merida, Palenque, and the Calakmul region, and the noticeboard and reception are useful sources of information on colectivos, ADO schedules, and shared transport south. Travellers who need air conditioning, quiet, or modern fittings will be better served elsewhere in the historic centre, but for backpackers and cyclists prioritising cost and a central address in the old town, La Parroquia remains the reference budget option in the state capital.
