Hotel Puerta Calakmul sits at kilometre 98 of the Escarcega-Chetumal highway, in the hamlet of Conhuas in the municipality of Calakmul, in the far south of Campeche state, Mexico. The property occupies the junction where the paved access road to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve leaves Highway 186, which makes it the closest formal accommodation to the reserve gate; the archaeological zone itself lies about 60 kilometres further south along that road, a drive of roughly ninety minutes each way because of the narrow surface and the wildlife that crosses it. Xpujil, the nearest town with fuel, banking, and shops, is around 30 kilometres east.

Accommodation consists of sixteen wooden cabanas raised on stilts among the trees and linked by raised walkways and gravel paths. The design is deliberately rustic: timber walls, palapa-influenced roofs, mosquito screening, and fans rather than air conditioning in most units. There are no televisions anywhere on the property and mobile signal is weak, so the soundtrack is howler monkeys before dawn, cicadas after dark, and toucans and parrots through the morning. Cabanas come as standard, double, triple, and family configurations, the larger ones suiting groups travelling together to the Rio Bec sites.

A swimming pool set in a forest clearing is the main daytime facility, useful after the humid climb up Structure II at Calakmul. The restaurant serves Mexican and Yucatecan cooking with a fixed daily menu alongside a la carte options; breakfast is normally served early enough for guests leaving at first light, which is when the reserve is coolest and the wildlife most visible. A bar area adjoins the dining room, and the kitchen will prepare packed lunches for the long day inside the reserve, where there are no food services.

The hotel arranges guided visits to Calakmul, Balamku, and the Rio Bec cluster, and can put guests in touch with local drivers, which matters for anyone arriving by bus. Service is informal and practical rather than polished, geared to travellers whose priority is proximity to the ruins and to the forest. Rates run roughly MXN 2,500 to 4,000 per night, higher in the December to April dry season, when demand from birdwatchers and archaeology travellers peaks.
