Calakmul Grand Plaza and Structure II Climb

The trailhead sits at the INAH ticket office at the end of the paved 60 km access road that turns south off Federal Highway 186 at Conhuas, in the heart of Campeche's Calakmul Biosphere Reserve; there is a car park at the site but no fuel, ATM, or mobile signal past Conhuas, and three separate cash-only fees (community, CONANP, and INAH) are collected on the way in. The standard loop covers about 5 km of interconnected paths across flat forest floor, gaining almost no elevation until the final approach to Structure II, where a 45 m stone staircase climbs to the summit. Underfoot the path alternates between packed earth, exposed limestone bedrock, and worn stone steps that turn slick after rain, and the forest canopy shades most of the walk except the open plazas and the pyramid stairs themselves, where full sun and high humidity make the final climb the most demanding stretch. Along the way the route passes the Gran Plaza with its stelae, the ball court, and Structure VII before reaching Structure II, the tallest standing Maya pyramid in the state, where the summit opens onto an unbroken canopy view running into Guatemala; most walkers treat the summit as the natural turn-around point before retracing the loop back toward the ticket office. There are no water sources, refuge huts, or shade shelters anywhere on the circuit beyond the tree canopy itself, so all water and supplies must be carried in from Conhuas or Xpujil. Howler monkeys, toucans, and ocellated turkeys are regularly seen or heard along the quieter stretches of forest between the main plazas, and the relative isolation of the site compared with better-known Yucatan ruins means the trail rarely feels crowded even at midday.
